ONLINE STREAMING HOW-TO/RADIO REQUEST LINE MASTERLIST

Radio Chart - Top 50 Most-Played Songs in the USA, updated daily
On-Demand Music Streaming Chart - Most-Streamed Songs, updated weekly
GOAL: to get Justin to the top of these lists, and consequently to a top spot on the Billboard sales charts

What we know:
Billboard changed its metric for ranking the Hot 100 in March 2012 to weight online streaming pretty heavily (IMO it's obviously a sketchy business move to promote these streaming sites ~~and it's working because guess who just registered on all of them to play Jus10~~) - we all remember how Boyfriend had the 4th best single debut week OF ALL TIME and still landed at #2 on the charts because fun. was getting more online streams, right? Right.

Anyway, this means that Billboard's Hot 100 rankings are now a combination of 1) digital sales, through outlets like iTunes and Amazon; 2) radio requests and plays; and 3) online streaming as reported on the On-Demand Songs chart (literally, this chart is what they use to run their ranking formula).

What we don't know:
So we know WHERE Billboard is getting its online streaming scores now, but we don't know exactly HOW the On-Demand chart rank is compiled. There are three options, really:

1) It could be based on the total number of plays a song gets, PERIOD. I doubt this is true, though, because it'd be so easy to cheat under a system like this - stan boots up laptop, makes playlist out of her/his fave's singles, leaves it on repeat forever, PROFIT. It doesn't make logical sense, as last.fm has known for years.

2) The other main option is that it's based on the number of individual people who play the song daily, whether they listen once or 30 times each. This "one listener, one vote" system is a lot more likely, and is the way last.fm ranks popular songs.

3) Or maybe it's a combination of these two approaches! Maybe if a person listens once they earn, say, one point for the song, but if they listen more than once it's given 1.5 points. This would make sense, too, as it's a way to account for people who listen to the song just because they're curious about it vs. people who listen to the song because they love it.

Since we don't know, the smartest thing to do is:
Listen to the song a few times per station. Play it twice everywhere and we've covered all bases. And in general, try to use one of these services instead of your personal iTunes/Windows Media Player (jk no one uses Windows Media Player) to listen to Justin's music when you have the option. :]

• MOG - facebook sign-in or registration required
• Rdio - registration required
• Slacker - no registration required(? it's not working for me, so i can't verify)

mediabase: how-to

We all know requesting songs on the radio help singles chart on Mediabase and therefore reach top positions on Billboard.

Mediabase is the most effective way to request songs on radio because:
• On Twitter most radio stations get spam all time so they might miss your request.
• Calling the stations takes a lot of time and money.
• Emailing the stations is more time consuming and once again stations may get spam.

However, if you feel more comfortable requesting on twitter, by phone or email then that's good too! =)
It's better to request than to not request at all =)

*You can only request once a day per station on MediaBase

how to request:

HEADS UP, there's a website that automates this process now - http://bieberline.webatu.com/pop.php - so check that out before you go any urther. It seems to have a low server limit right now, though, so if it's down you'll have to do the requests the old-fashioned way.

1. Look for the song in the list
2. Click and check the song
3. Add any name you want (a keysmash or single letter works)
4. Add any email address you want (a keysmash or single letter works)
5. Type in the confirmation code
6. Submit
If you don't find the song in the list then:
7. Write the name of the song and artist
8. Repeat steps 3, 4, 5 and 6

**some people find that it takes 2 tries to get mediabase to accept their request - make sure you get the confirmation screen before moving on to the next station!

it's better to go one page at a time than to open a bunch at once, since mediabase uses cookies to track requests and could get confused/give you error messages if you have more than one page open.

!! Using an autofill extension on your web browser makes mediabase requesting WAYYYY easier.
I use Chrome and love Autofill, but you can find them for Firefox/etc, too. Here's a quick rundown of how Autofill for Chrome works:

1. Open a Mediabase page. Fill out ONLY the song, name, and email fields. Do not fill out the confirmation code. Right click, select Autofill >> Add rules for this form...

2. Choose "New Form" and create a name for your autofill form from drop down menu #2 (I used "Mediabase - ALAYLM," as you can see). Then click "Create Autofill Rules."

3. Now when you open a Mediabase page, those fields will be pre-filled! All you will need to do from now on is check for Justin on the checkbox list and fill out the confirmation code by hand.
